Martinsburg

Martinsburg é uma cidade e sede do condado de Berkeley no vale de Shenandoah da Virgínia Ocidental. O povoado situa-se num cruzamento de rotas de transporte a uma altitude de aproximadamente 140 metros e serve como centro regional para a indústria e a agricultura.

A Assembleia Geral da Virgínia fundou a cidade em dezembro de 1778 durante a Guerra da Independência. As oficinas ferroviárias do caminho de ferro Baltimore and Ohio desenvolveram-se no século XIX e tornaram-se em 1877 o ponto de partida de um conflito laboral nacional que trouxe tropas federais.

A cidade tem o nome do Coronel Thomas Bryan Martin, cuja família possuía grandes extensões de terra na região. Hoje a paisagem urbana mostra edifícios de tijolo do século XIX e ruas largas que recordam a época ferroviária.

A autoestrada interestadual 81 segue para nordeste em direção a Maryland e torna a aproximação de carro simples. O centro da cidade pode ser explorado a pé, com muitas lojas e serviços a uma distância fácil de caminhar.

A primeira estação de correios no território do que viria a ser a Virgínia Ocidental abriu aqui em 1792.
